FESTIVAL HISTORY + OTHER GENERAL QUESTIONS

What is Indie Week?

Indie Week is a twice-annual music festival.

  • Indie Week Ireland takes place in Limerick April 23 – 26, 2014
  • Indie Week Canada takes place in Toronto, October 15-19, 2014

Indie Week is a music festival about truly showcasing independent artists in front of industry.

As an artist-friendly festival, each act is listened to in the selection process and chosen on their musical merits. This means the acts aren’t lost in a giant band stew.

It’s about the music, not the competition. It’s about giving the underdog a chance. It’s about networking, learning, and sharing ideas. It’s about getting a leg up in the near impossible landscape of the music business.

Yes there is a competition element during the festival as industry judges pick the top act of the festival which will be awarded a trip to Toronto, Canada Oct 15-19 to headline at Indie Week Canada!!! We pay for up to 5 flights and accommodations for up to 5 band members / band members only.

How long has Indie Week been around?

This is the 11th year for Indie Week Canada and the 6th year for Indie Week Ireland.

Why Ireland?

Irish band Vesta Varro (from Limerick) won Indie Week Canada 2007, and the year after, there was a spike in Irish applicants.

Lo and behold, Indie Week Canada 2008 was won by yet another Irish band also from Limerick – Walter Mitty & The Realists.

We decided that there was something about Ireland and Indie Week Ireland was born!

What’s up with judging and the prize?

Members of the music industry judge artist showcases with a finals and pick the top act of the festival. But it’s not all about winning – we’ve had judges like other acts and also offer to work with them. It’s up to the band to perform and impress to open the door!

Is this a battle of the bands?

Heavens no! Judging is done quietly and discretely. Bands are sent the judging sheets by email after the festival for feedback.

Many attendees, performers and press have raved about the balance that Indie Week has achieved between festival and competition.

The end result is a fantastic showcase of the ‘Best of the Fest’ at the end of the week.

Can anyone apply?

Pretty much - Acts accepted can be signed to an indie label, an indie label distributed by a major but not acts signed directly to a major label.

We accept acts from most genres : acoustic, solo, folk, rock, alternative, hard rock, metal, eclectic, electronic, punk, hardcore, pop, soft rock.

We are looking for the best!

Are you looking to expand to other territories?

Indie Week’s long-term goal is to develop an extensive festival network. If you represent a music festival and want to discuss partnership, email Founder/Director Darryl Hurs at darryl.hurs@indieweek.com.

Will I get signed if I play Indie Week?

It is up to YOU (the artist) to take advantage of the opportunities we offer.

Many acts have made connections and moved on to work with managers, lawyers, producers, agents – all because of their performance at Indie Week. And yes some have been signed.

STAGE TECHNICALITIES

Is backline provided?

We provide the basis, drums minus breakables, bass rig, guitar amp (1-2 depending on venue). The rest is on the bands to provide.

JUDGING, FINALS + PRIZE

What is the judging criteria?

Judges score 1-5 on:

  • Songwriting
  • Professionalism
  • Performance
  • Image
  • Crowd reaction
  • Stage presence
  • Ready for the next level (the “it” factor)
  • Three industry judges preside at each showcase.
    • Sometimes we may only have two judges due to unforeseen circumstances such as accidents, sickness, traffic, weather, etc. In any case we do our best to find a replacement judge, but in some cases the result may be two attendant judges.
  • We have had to pull judges when conflicts of interests came to light (the judge realized they have worked with someone in the band, knows someone in the band, is a relative of someone in the band, etc.). We take fairness VERY SERIOUSLY.
  • In the case of a tie, the judges will pow wow and decide mutually who the winner is.
  • There is only one winner.

NOTE : INDIE WEEK takes artist judging very seriously and do our best to ensure a fair and equal process.

Who is judging our showcase?

  • We may or may not release the names of all participating judges on the Indie Week website as many judges want to remain anonymous plus to keep in fairness we try to avoid any participating act to know ahead of time who is judging and have an opportunity to contact a judge prior to the festival.
  • In order to maintain a fair and equal process we will not disclose the judges’ stations prior to the showcases.

What is the prize for winning?

  • Indie Week Ireland 2014 Top Act will get to headline Indie Week Canada Oct 15 – 19, 2014, complete with free flights to Toronto for up to five band members.

How do I collect my performer pass?

  • If you can’t collect the passes at the Launch Party, it will be available at the door on the night of your performance. Please notify Indie Week staff beforehand.

Can I get an extra pass for my manager?

For sure – especially since we’ll know your manager well after liaising over email leading up to the festival.

Is there guest list?

  • Guest list is for music industry only, so if industry is coming to see you, certainly send along their name and company affiliation!

I have media coming to see me – can I get them on guest list?

Better yet, get them to fill out the Media Accreditation Form and they can get a media pass so they can attend the whole shebang, not just your showcase!

Compensation + Application Fees

Do I get paid?

Unfortunately no. Revenue goes directly to:

  • Festival operations and promotion
  • Airfare for the winning band.

Is this a Cash Grab?

Hell no! SO much work and dedication goes into the festival and making it a great experience for all participants. It costs a lot to run a festival of this size.

It takes a lot of time to go through each application thoroughly, follow links, websites etc.

The application fee also helps by making sure bands are serious when they apply.

Is my application fee refunded if I’m not selected?

Unfortunately no, the application is non-refundable.

BUT – if you apply and aren;t selected, we would be more than happy to give you full passes to attend and network during the festival.

If not selected is there a stand-by list?

YES! We often select acts and because of some of their touring commitments they are not able to make it so we do select other acts from our stand by list.

We hope to see you at Indie Week!
